Mooinjer Veggey is an educational charity which exists to promote the knowledge and use of Manx Gaelic among young people. Established in 1996, it currently runs 'Possan Cloie' (play group), a nursery in St. John's, and supports the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh. Their aim is to provide education with or through the Manx language, giving children the advantages of learning a second language at an early age.
Possan Cloie ('Play Group') is a parents and tots group in which children and parents learn and use Manx language through activities, songs and rhymes. There are currently two groups, which meet during term-time: one which takes place at St. Johns methodist hall on Monday mornings, and another which takes place at the town hall in Castletown on Friday mornings. You don't have to register in advance for the Possan Cloie sessions, just come along. Entrance is a couple of pounds, and includes tea or coffee.
The Mooinjer Veggey Nursery operates in St. John's during term time, and caters for two to four year olds. It is registered with the Isle of Man Department of Health and Social Care and follow the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) curriculum encouraging learning through play. Children learn Manx Gaelic through songs and rhymes and by using limited but regular Manx words and phrases in daily routines.
Mooinjer Veggey provides support to the Bunscoill Ghaelgagh - the world's only Manx medium primary school - and it also chairs the governing body of the school. The Bunscoill Ghaelgagh is run by the Department of Education, Sport and Culture and the curriculum is taught entirely through Manx.
